ANZ bank backs Djokovic
November 1, 2016
Infuriated sparks flew all over the sports world when Raymond Moore, the Indian Wells tournament director stated that women ‘should get on their knees’ and be wholly grateful to males that they are able to build up a career profile in designated male sports (the Guardian, 2016). If wage disparity is to be one hundred percent extinguished by 2186, how can we get rid of this sexist mentality?
Those sparks awakened into a raging flame when World No.1 ATP Male Grand-Slam champion Novak Djokovic nonchalantly agreed that sportsmen deserve a greater monetary reward than sportswomen as they bring in more audience to watch the games and matches than sportswomen (FOX Sports, 2016). "I think that our men's tennis world, ATP world, should fight for more because the stats are showing that we have much more spectators on the men's tennis matches. I think that's one of the reasons why maybe we should get awarded more. Women should fight for what they think they deserve and we should fight for what we think we deserve."
Serena Williams the 21 times Grand Slam Champion smashed back into Novak’s court “I have been playing since the age of two and it would be shocking to say my son would deserve more than my daughter. It is irrelevant. Novak is entitled to his opinion but if he has a daughter – I think he has a son right now – he should talk to her and tell her how his son deserves more money because he is a boy”.
“It all boils down to that. I would never put a sex against another sex. I think it’s unfair to compare, we have had so many great women champions and players who have brought such great vision to the sport. There have been great men players too, but women’s tennis is the biggest sport for women – period. Men’s tennis is not the biggest sport for them but it’s still huge. You do have soccer, football, basketball. Everyone works really hard. Once again, it all boils down to how you’d explain it to your kids” (Williams, 2016).
2186 was disheartened to learn that ANZ recently hired Djokovic in lieu of long time gender equity advocate Martina Navratilova. This is tremendously disappointing.
Perhaps an email to ANZ’s managing director – products and marketing, Matt Boss would help?
